The Frugal Fashionista

Let’s face it, cultivating your own personal style is much easier for some than it may be for others. It’s easy to look fashionable all the time when you have a personal stylist at your beck and call, not to mention an unlimited budget at your disposal.

But for those of us who may not be as fortunate, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you unleash your inner fashionista without having to rob a bank!

We at Life in Trinidad Fashion believe that you can look fabulous without spending an exorbitant amount of money. The important factor is not in the price tag but in choosing affordable and timeless handpicked essentials, that complement each other.

Here are some tips to help you get the look you’re after while on a budget.

Write it down

The next time you go shopping for clothes, proceed as though you’re going to the supermarket. Take note of what you currently have in your wardrobe – colour, size etc. – so that you can pair them up with your new additions.

Read your tags before making purchases

Read the label before you buy. If you buy a dry-clean-only item, you are sure to keep paying for it every time you drop it off at the cleaners. Stick to machine-washables and save.

Go with a friend

If you are a person who is easily tempted and tend to overspend, take a shopping buddy with you to hold you accountable. Try not to take a friend who is a bigger shopaholic than you!

Not every sale is a steal

Don’t buy clothes unless you really need them, even if they’re on sale.

Be assertive

Don’t fall victim to buying everything that you try on due to an over enthusiastic sales clerk. It is their job to compliment you! (shout out to the ones that do)

Just one more thing…

And now that we have that out of the way, what is most important is that you know your true value does not come from store bought adornments and frivolous consumerism. What makes us uniquely beautiful is, of course, what’s on the inside.
